About the Smart Hydrogen Hub

The Smart Hydrogen Hub originated from a shared ambition to accelerate the practical deployment of green hydrogen in the Port of Rotterdam. The initiative was launched following discussions between industry leaders, technology companies, public organisations and knowledge institutions on the barriers slowing the hydrogen transition. A common conclusion emerged: while many promising technologies were being developed, there were too few integrated demonstration environments where these innovations could be validated under real-world conditions.

The hub is being developed by Platform Zero, Adsensys, the Port of Rotterdam and InnovationQuarter. A major milestone has been the selection of Enapter's AEM Nexus 2500 as the core electrolyser technology for the green hydrogen demonstrator. Our ambition is to create a scalable demonstration model that accelerates innovation, supports collaboration and contributes to the development of Rotterdam's hydrogen value chain.

Why the Smart Hydrogen Hub?

The team inside the Enapter Nexus 2500 electrolyser container

Green hydrogen is essential for decarbonising industry, mobility and the maritime sector. While hydrogen technologies continue to advance, there are still few places where complete hydrogen systems can be demonstrated under real-world conditions.

The Smart Hydrogen Hub addresses this challenge by providing an open demonstration environment where renewable electricity, battery storage, hydrogen production, certification and local hydrogen use come together in one integrated energy system. By connecting technology providers, industry, knowledge institutions and public partners, the hub accelerates innovation, validates integrated solutions and supports the development of Rotterdam's hydrogen ecosystem.

Green hydrogen demonstrator

By establishing a shared test and demonstration infrastructure, the Smart Hydrogen Hub lowers costs and risks for innovators, fosters better coordination of projects, creates synergies in value chain developments and positions the Rotterdam area in the rapidly developing hydrogen sector at regional, national and European level.

Initially, the hub focuses on an integrated hydrogen demonstration facility combining renewable electricity, battery storage, Enapter's AEM Nexus 2500 electrolyser (2.5 MW), energy management, certification and local hydrogen users. The demonstrator will validate how these technologies operate together under real-world industrial conditions.

About the location

The M4H area, short for Merwe-Vierhavens, is a former industrial zone in the Rotterdam port area undergoing large renovations. It is becoming a hub for innovation and sustainable initiatives, attracting businesses and organizations focused on the energy transition, circular economy and future mobility.

With its strategic location, industrial heritage and space dedicated to demonstration and testing facilities and end-to-end infrastructure, M4H offers an ideal environment for innovative projects and collaborations. Its proximity to educational institutions like TU Delft, Erasmus University, the Shipping and Transport College and Hogeschool Rotterdam ensures a constant flow of fresh ideas and talent. By serving as a permanent showcase, the hub not only facilitates the validation and development of new technologies but also strengthens the local cluster. Together, we pave the way for sustainable solutions that are shaping the future.
